Efrain Forero, seen here crossing a river near the town of Honda, won the first Vuelta a Colombia in 1951. This picture was taken during the first stage of that race. His courageous victory instantly made him one of Colombia's most beloved sports icons.

Today, Forero (known as El Indominable Zipa) lives in Bogota, and continues to ride his bike almost every single day, at the age of 81.
Only two years ago, I went into a bike shop in Bogota, and was told I'd missed Forero by only minutes. He had been in the shop to get his bike worked on.
